QUESTIONS ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE
Have questions about acupuncture or what to expect during treatment? We’ve answered some of the questions we hear most often below. If you don’t see your question here, please contact our clinic — we’re happy to help.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of traditional East Asian medicine that involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. Treatments are individualized based on your symptoms, health history, and wellness goals.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people find acupuncture very comfortable. The needles are extremely thin, and you may feel a brief sensation when a needle is inserted, followed by warmth, heaviness, tingling, or relaxation. If you experience discomfort during treatment, let your practitioner know so they can make adjustments.
What can acupuncture help with?
People seek acupuncture for a variety of concerns, including pain, muscle tension, stress, headaches, sleep difficulties, and general wellness. Your practitioner will discuss your specific concerns and whether acupuncture may be appropriate for you.
Are acupuncture needles safe?
When performed by a properly trained and licensed practitioner using sterile, single-use needles, acupuncture is generally considered safe. Minor effects such as temporary soreness, bruising, or slight bleeding can sometimes occur.
Are there any side effects?
Some people experience temporary soreness, minor bruising, lightheadedness, or fatigue after treatment. Serious complications are uncommon when acupuncture is performed appropriately. Tell your practitioner about any unusual or concerning symptoms.
Can acupuncture be combined with my other treatments or medications?
Some people experience temporary soreness, minor bruising, lightheadedness, or fatigue after treatment. Serious complications are uncommon when acupuncture is performed appropriately. Tell your practitioner about any unusual or concerning symptoms.
Can I receive acupuncture if I’m pregnant?
Acupuncture may be appropriate during pregnancy for some people, but certain acupuncture points and techniques may not be suitable. Always tell your practitioner if you are pregnant or may be pregnant so your treatment can be appropriately adapted.
Can I drive after acupuncture?
Most people can resume their normal activities after acupuncture. However, some people feel particularly relaxed or mildly lightheaded afterward. If you don’t feel fully alert, wait until you feel comfortable before driving or operating machinery.
QUESTIONS ABOUT APPOINTMENTS
Have questions about your first appointment, preparation or about the Red Door treatment methodology? If you don’t see your question answered, please contact our clinic and we will be happy to help.
What happens during my first appointment?
Your first visit typically begins with a conversation about your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and treatment goals. Your practitioner may then perform an assessment and develop an individualized treatment plan. If appropriate, acupuncture treatment may take place during your first visit.
How long does an acupuncture appointment take?
Appointment times vary depending on the type of visit and your individual needs. Your clinic can provide an estimated appointment length when you schedule.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments varies from person to person. It depends on factors such as your condition, how long you have been experiencing symptoms, your overall health, and how you respond to treatment. Your practitioner will discuss a recommended treatment schedule with you and reassess your progress over time.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the areas being treated. Depending on your treatment, you may be asked to adjust or remove certain clothing while maintaining your comfort and privacy.
Should I eat before acupuncture?
It’s generally a good idea to have a light meal or snack before your appointment rather than arriving very hungry. Avoid having a very large meal immediately before treatment. If you have specific dietary or medical considerations, discuss them with your practitioner.
Do I need a referral?
Referral requirements vary depending on your location, insurance plan, and circumstances. Contact our clinic before your first appointment if you are unsure whether you need a referral.
Does insurance cover acupuncture?
Insurance coverage varies by plan. Some insurance policies cover acupuncture for specific conditions, while others do not. We recommend checking directly with your insurance provider or contacting our office for information about accepted insurance plans and payment options.
What should I do before my appointment?
For the best experience:
- Eat a light meal or snack beforehand.
- Stay hydrated.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
- Avoid excessive alcohol or recreational substances before treatment.
- Bring a list of medications and supplements you currently take.
- Let your practitioner know about any relevant medical conditions or recent changes in your health.
